In December 2023, the Balipara Foundation and Conservation International unveiled a comprehensive plan for the "Great Forests of the Eastern Himalayas" project. Starting in 2024, local organizations will collaborate to plant 20 million trees, conserve and restore over 61,000 hectares of land, and create favorable economic conditions for over 178,000 people to find work in their villages. The plan was announced during COP28 in Dubai.
